  • Description

ALREADY PLAGUED BY LABOUR TROUBLES, ROME FOUND ITSELF YESTERDAY THE SCENE OF ANOTHER MANIFESTATION OF DISCONTENT. SIX THOUSAND PEOPLE STAGE A NOISY DEMONSTRATION IN CAVOUR SQUARE, DEMANDING THE INTRODUCTION OF DIVORCE INTO ITALY.

A BILL TO INTRODUCE DIVORCE IS DUE TO BE DEBATED IN THE ITALIAN PARLIAMENT ON MONDAY. IT IS FIERCELY OPPOSED BY THE CHRISTIAN DEMOCRAT PARTY, WHICH DRAWS MUCH SUPPORT FROM THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH BUT HAS RECEIVED STRONG BACKING FROM A POWERFUL ALLIANCE OF LAY PARTIES, AND HAS GOOD PROSPECTS OF BECOMING LAW.

AT PRESENT, THERE IS NO DIVORCE IN ITALY. AS COUPLE MAY ONLY OBTAIN A SEPARATION ORDER. A RECENT EXAMPLE OF THE SITUATION WHICH CAN ARISE FROM THE PRESENT LAWS IS THE CASE OF ITALIAN FILM STAR SOPHIA LOREN, AND HER HUSBAND CARLO PONTI. PONTI'S DIVORCE FRO HIS ITALIAN WIFE, IN ORDER TO MARRY MISS LOREN OBTAINED OUTSIDE ITALY, WAS NOT CONSIDERED VALID, AND THERE WERE FEARS THAT HE COULD BE CHARGED WITH BIGAMY.

HUNDREDS OF DEMONSTRATORS OF ALL AGES AND MARITAL CONDITIONS CARRIED PLACARDS MOCKING THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH FOR ITS OPPOSITION TO DIVORCE. ON ONE WAS A PHOTOGRAPH OF THE POPE DRAGGING BEHIND HIM A DOG, BEARING THE WORDS: 'WE WANT THE DIVORCE'.

THE CROWD WERE ADDRESSED BY ONE OF THE BILL'S CO-AUTHORS, SOCIALIST DEPUTY LORIS FORTUNA. SUPPORTERS WERE ENCOURAGED TO SIGN A PETITION.

CAVOUR SQUARE IS ALMOST IN THE SHADOW OF VATICAN CITY. SOME OF THE CAMPAIGNERS SCATTERED PROPAGANDA LEAFLETS IN SAINT PETER'S SQUARE. VATICAN POLICEMEN, TOO LATE TO PREVENT THEM, PICKED UP ALL THE LEAFLETS THEY COULD FIND.
