  • Description

Floods have brought devastation and havoc to the ancient Italian port city of Genoa, killing at least 23 people. yesterday (Thursday) a wall of water smashed through the old quarter of the city as the river Bisagno burst its banks in the centre of the city, built on the side of a hill.

The torrent of floodwater swept away vehicles; undermined buildings and caused a number of bridges to be nearly swept away. Scores of vehicles were left abandoned in the streets as road became impossible through flooding, subsidence and the build up of oozing silt.

Emergency measures have been taken to strengthen buildings and road severely weakened by the rush of water cascading through the streets. Six people are known to have died in the city area and at least 15 others are feared to have drowned in suburban flooding. The flooding followed hours of heavy rainstorms. Hundreds of people were evacuated from their homes which were in danger of collapsing under the pressure of the water.
