    The United States' Apollo Eight Moon Mission is scheduled to liftoff Saturday, December 21st. The third stage of the Saturn Five rocket that will boost the three-man spacecraft into orbit was tested recently.

    The Apollo Eight Moon Mission is scheduled to take off in less than two weeks. The Saturn rocket that will launch the three-man astronaut crew is now undergoing extensive checkouts to prepare it for the countdown.

    The Saturn third stage--called the S-FOUR-B--was tested recently at the McDonnell Douglas Astronautics Company's Test Center at Sacramento, California. It's this stage that generates the final thrust to place the manned spacecraft into orbit around the earth. The third stage also will restart and propel the Apollo Eight toward the moon.

    After the static firing test was approved by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration...the third stage was trucked to Mather Air Force Base near Sacramento. The S-FOUR-B is 58-feet-long and 21 feet wide. Seven 35-foot-long machine segments of aluminum alloy were welded together to form the tank cylinder. The seams were welded in an environmentally controlled area and inspected by use of a portable ???
