  • Description

The three leaders of a plot to overthrow President Anwar Sadat of Egypt 13 months ago were found guilty in Cairo yesterday (10 May), and now face possible execution.

All three were among 92 defendants on trial for their alleged part in an attack on Egypt's Technical Military Academy last year. Eleven people, including five soldiers, were killed and twenty-seven people injured in the attack.

Before the judges entered to read out their verdict, there was uproar in the court yesterday, with the 92 defendants -- Moslem fanatics who wanted to turn Egypt into a strictly religious state, according to the prosecution -- joining in Islamic religious chants.

Seventy-four of the 92 defendants faced possible death sentences. But the three judges declared that it had been decided to refer the papers on only the three leaders to the Mufti -- the Government's adviser on Islamic religious affairs -- a step normally taken before death sentences are passed.

The three leaders are a former employee of the Arab League, Saleh Abdallah Sarreya, aged 37, and two students Tallal El-Ansari and Karem Ezzat El-Andoli, both 22.

The court convenes again to pass the sentences on May 31.
