    BUT THE COLOURFUL CONSERVATIVE,WHO RENOUNCED HIS TITLE OF VISCOUNT HAILSHAM TO FIGHT THE CONTEST, WAS UNABLE TO PREVENT THE GOVERNMENT MAJORITY FROM BEING SLASHED BY NEARLY TWO-THIRDS FORM 14,771 VOTES IN 1959 TO 5,276 VOTES.

    THE BY-ELECTION WAS CAUSED BY THE ELEVATION TO THE PEERAGE OF SIR WAVELL WAKEFIELD, THE CONSERVATIVE MEMBER.HE HAD A MAJORITY OF 14,771 IN THE LAST GENERAL ELECTION.

    THE OTHER CANDIDATES WERE PETER PLOUVIEZ (LABOUR) AND MICHAEL WHEELER, THE LIBERAL.
