  • Description

The Jordan government took newsmen on a guided tour of several of its radical new students army training camps in the Zarqa area, near Amman, on Thursday (3 July).

The camps are joint Education and Defence Ministries' projects and cater for a total of 280 students in a four-week course.

Selected students were sent to seven army training centres and devote 40 par cent of their time to general knowledge lectures, marching and gymnastics, and 60 percent of their time to studying weapons.

Student army training camps are based on an original idea by former Prime Minister, the late Wasfi El-Tell. He launched a project for summer youth camps in 1962.

Mr. El.Tell's plan was to utilise the energy of youth in developing the rural areas of Jordan, and, at the same time, to offer a basic military training to those wanted it.

The first of the new courses started on 20 June this year, and foreign newsmen were invited to check on the students' progress.

This is a student summer camp, with a difference. It's part of a new military training scheme recently introduced by the government in Jordan. In a joint Education-Defence Ministries' project, the government enrolled 280 students in seven army training centres for a four week course. Forty per cent of the students' time is devoted to general knowledge lectures, marching and gymnastics. The other sixty per cent is taken up by specialised military training....particularly in the use of high-powered weapons. The first course went into operation in the middle of June this year, and on Thursday, the Government invited foreign newsman to take a look at how the students were progressing. Naturally the firing range is one of the most important classrooms, and the equipment is the American M16 rifle.

Student military training camps are based on an original project of former Prime Minister, the late Wasfi El-Tell. In 1962 he launched a scheme to utilise the energy of Jordan's youth in developing the country's rural areas with a system of summer work camps. The camps also offered a basic army training to those who wanted it.

Now the new camps offer training in the handling of all light weapons, tanks, land mines and communication equipment.

At the end of the training period each student will be given a special certificate....in a mass army graduation parade.
