  • Description

Firefighters were battling to save luxury homes in the suburbs of Los Angeles yesterday (Friday), as fierce desert winds fanned three forest fires ringing the north and east of the city.

California's Government Ronald Reagan last night declared a state of emergency in Los Angeles County enabling him to call in the National Guard to combat the fires if necessary.

Latest reports estimate that at least 100 luxury houses in the fashionable suburb areas have been destroyed including the homes of film and television stars. One unconfirmed death was reported, and five people -- three of them firemen -- have been injured in the flames. The final casualty toll is expected to go much higher.

The fires sent balls of flame leaping from roof to roof, wiping out almost entire streets of ranch-style homes. The homes of Western star Dale Robertson and television actor Chad Everett were destroyed. And the flames also damaged the property of actress Angela Lansbury and of Governor Reagan.
