Background: THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES IN JAMAICA WILL BE FORMALLY OPENED TOMORROW (THURSDAY) BY THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH, THE PRESIDENT OF THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES FEDERATION.

ALL THIS WEEK SOME OF THE COMMONWEALTH'S TOP ATHLETES AND SWIMMERS HAVE BEEN GETTING DOWN TO TRAINING AFTER A BRIEF PERIOD OF SETTLING DOWN IN THEIR TEMPORARY HOMES IN KINGSTON.

A TOTAL OF MORE THAN FOURTEEN HUNDRED ATHLETES AND OTHER COMPETITORS ARE EXPECTED TO TAKE PART IN VARIOUS EVENTS.

FOR MANY OF THEM THEIR FEW DAYS IN JAMAICA BEFORE THE START OF EVENTS HAS PROVIDED AN OPPORTUNITY TO GET ACCLIMATISED TO JAMAICA'S TROPICAL WEATHER.

THE ATHLETIC EVENTS WILL BEGIN AT THE JAMAICA NATIONAL STADIUM ON FRIDAY MORNING. OTHER EVENTS TO BEGIN ON FRIDAY MORNING ARE BADMINTON AND FENCING.

AFTERNOON AND EVENING EVENTS INCLUDE WEIGHTLIFTING, SWIMMING, CYCLING AND BOXING.
