Soccer fans in Rome on May 14 fought to buy tickets for the European Cup Final between Roma and Liverpool to be held in the city on may 30. Sixteen people were reported injured and six arrested. Three of the injured were policemen. Hundreds of police officers in riot gear or on horseback attempted to stop fights with teargas and batons during a skirmish outside the ticket office. An estimated 15,000 people were waiting outside the Olympic Stadium when tickets went on sale. About half of the 45,000 tickets available had already gone to season ticket holder. Fans alleged that the Roma Football Club had not organised a queueing system for tickets, and it was queue-jumping which led to the fights breaking out. Cars parked near the stadium were damaged. Italian authorities are preparing for the May 30 match with extensive security precautions. Thousands of riot police will be on duty to search fans and patrol the stands. At least 20,000 British fans are expected to arrive in Rome with Liverpool team. British fans have a bad reputation abroad. The most recent example was the violence in Brussels involving Spurs fans at the UEFA Cup Final on May 9. Police have plans to provide special buses to take British fans to the stadium and separate them from Italian fans. Mounted police will also be stadium and separate them from Italian champions Liverpool will be playing Roma on their ground. Roma have yet to win the European Cup.
