    MORE THAN 900,000 CONSTRUCTION WORKERS TODAY JOINED THE WAVE OF THE STRIKES NOW SWEEPING ITALY. IT WAS THE SECOND TIME IN A WEEK THAT THE BUILDERS STOPPED WORK AND THOUSANDS OF CONSTRUCTION SITES THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY LAY IDLE.

    THE STRIKERS ARE DEMANDING HIGHER WAGES AND A FIVE-DAY 40-HOUR WEEK IN THEIR NEW LABOUR CONTRACT.

    IN ROME TODAY ABOUT 10,000 IDLE WORKERS PARADED THROUGH THE STREETS OF THE OLD CITY. NEAR THE PIAZZA VENEZIA COMMUNIST UNION LEADER ALDO GIUNTI MADE A SPEECH DENOUNCING THE GOVERNMENT FOR ITS LABOUR POLICIES.

    THE BUILDERS WERE JOINING 200,000 CHEMICAL AND PHARMACEUTICAL WORKERS AND SEVERAL THOUSAND CEMENT WORKERS WHO BEGAN A 48-HOUR STRIKE YESTERDAY.

    ALTOGETHER TWO AND A HALF MILLION WORKERS ARE EXPECTED TO STRIKE THIS WEEK AND HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS MORE HAVE THREATENED TO FOLLOW SUIT.

    THEY INCLUDE POST AND TELEGRAPH WORKERS AND STAFFS OF THE STATE ELECTRICITY COMPANY, COUNTRY DOCTORS AND RAILWAYMEN.
