  • Description

On Monday (1 May) Saigon police dispersed a crowd of May day demonstrators waving anti government and anti-United States banners.

The police arrested about 12 of the demonstrators who carried such banners as "Stop careless killing by bombing" and "Foreigners respect Viet Nam's sovereignty." A number of banners were written in Chinese.

Policemen moved into the crowd of 3000, which got as far as one block from Premier Nguyen Cao Ky's office. The demonstrators -- most of them students and labor unionists -- never got any farther. The police rounded up several "suspected trouble makers" and seized a number of banners and posters.

There was some shoving and pushing, but no injuries were reported.
