    YURI CHAROV BEAT H IS HUNGARIAN OPPONENT, KAZMER PACSERI 5-4, 5-4. ANOTHER SOVIET FENCER, VICTOR POUTIATINE ALSO DEFEATED LENNART ROHLIN OF SWEDEN AFTER FALLING BEHIND IN THE BEGINNING. THE FINAL SCORE WAS 2-5,5-2, 5-0. P.J. KIRBY OF BRITAIN WON HIS BOUT AGAINST ADAM LISEWSKI OF POLAND, 5-4, 5-4. A JAPANESE COMPETITOR, HEIZABURO OKAWA DEFEATED HIS ITALIAN OPPONENT NICOLA GRANIERI, 5-4, 5-3.

    CHAROV ALSO WON HIS SECOND ROUND CONTEST BUT WAS ELIMINATED LATER IN THE QUARTER-FINALS. POUTIATINE WAS ALSO KNOCKED OUT IN THE QUARTER-FINALS.
