    BELGIAN TROOPS ARE BEING WITHDRAWN FROM TWO OF THE SMALLEST COUNTRIES IN AFRICA - THE REPUBLIC OF RWANDA AND THE KINGDOM OF BURUNDI. THE FIRST UNITS ARRIVED TODAY (FRIDAY) AT A MILITARY AIRPORT ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF BRUSSELS.

    FILM SHOWS THE BIG WELCOME THEY RECEIVED FROM RELATIVES, WIVES AND GIRL-FRIENDS. RWANDA AND BURUNDI WERE FORMERLY THE BELGIAN TRUST TERRITORY OF RUANDA-URUNDI. THEY SPLIT UP WHEN THE TERRITORY BECAME INDEPENDENT ON JULY 1ST.

    THE TROOPS REMAINED IN RWANDA AND BURUNDI AFTER JULY 1ST BY ARRANGEMENT - BUT ARE NOW RETURNING HOME. THIS IS IN LINE WITH UNITED NATIONS POLICY. THE BELGIANS HAVE HANDED OVER USUMBURA CANTONMENT TO THE NEW BURUNDI ARMY, BUT SOME SENIOR OFFICERS ARE REMAINING IN RWANDA TO HELP TRAIN AFRICAN ARMY RECRUITS. THE RWANDA ARMY IS SAID TO BE ILL-TRAINED.
