  • Description

HUNDRED OF JAPANESE STUDENTS DEMONSTRATED IN JAPAN YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) OVER THE VISIT OF THE U.S. NUCLEAR AIRCRAFT CARRIER ENTERPRISE. THE MOST SERIOUS CLASS WAS IN THE SOUTHERN JAPANESE PORT OF SASEBO WHERE THE ENTERPRISE IS ANCHORED.

ABOUT 400 STUDENTS FOUGHT A FIERCE BATTLE WITH POLICE AT THE PORT. THE STUDENTS, ARMED WITH CLUBS AND WEARING WHITE METAL HELMETS, CHARGED A BRIDGE LEADING TO THE U.S. BASE AREA, AND WERE MET BY JAPANESE RIOT POLICE ARMED WITH TEARGAS, WATER CANNON AND BATONS.

IN A BATTLE LASTING ALMOST HALF AN HOUR, A TOTAL OF 149 STUDENTS, POLICE, TRADE UNIONISTS AND BYSTANDERS WERE INJURED, AND 12 STUDENTS WERE ARRESTED.

ABOUT 10,000 PEOPLE HAD EARLIER HELD A RALLY IN SASEBO IN PROTEST AGAINST THE VISIT OF THE ENTERPRISE, NUCLEAR WEAPONS, AND THE WAR IN VIETNAM.

YESTERDAY'S CASUALTIES BROUGHT THE TOTAL TO 442 INJURED SINCE A STUDENT FACTION LAUNCHED ITS ANTI-ENTERPRISE OFFENSIVE IN SASEBO ON JANUARY 17TH. TWO DAYS BEFORE THE CARRIER ARRIVED. THERE HAVE BEEN 67 ARRESTS SINCE THAT DATE.
