Background: Breakdowns on the London-Birmingham motorway, opening in two weeks, -could prove chaotic to the swift, smooth flow of Traffic. To ensure that vehicles keep on the move - the Automobile Association has evolved a high-powered breakdown service - a fleet of patrol cars, breakdown repair vehicles and spotter aircraft - all linked by radio. Phone boxes have been installed all along the motorway for summoning help. White police cars will keep a watch for careless motorists.
The motorway consists of three triplelanes. Along these, speed will be the rule - not the exception. Cars are not allowed go to stop or park on this 'no limit' highway.
Few service stations, and no garages line the route - so the A.A. patrol will provide an essential service. The motorway is also completely without lighting - but anti-dazzle screens have been installed at the bends of carriageways.
