  • Description

ONE OF THE LARGEST DEMONSTRATIONS BY FRENCH EX-SERVICEMEN STAGED IN RECENT YEARS WAS HELD IN PARIS TODAY, (SATURDAY), WHEN AN ESTIMATED 50 THOUSAND VETERANS AND THEIR SUPPORTERS MARCHED THROUGH THE STREETS DEMANDING INCREASES IN THEIR PENSIONS.

THE DEMONSTRATION WAS ORGANISED BY A LIASON COMMITTEE REPRESENTING EX-SERVICE ORGANISATIONS; DISABLED VETERANS' GROUPS; WAR WIDOWS ASSOCIATIONS; AND, GROUPS OF CIVILIANS WHO WERE DEPORTED DURING THE 1939-45 WAR TO WORK AS SLAVE LABOURERS.

FOR SOME TIME EX-SERVICEMEN'S ORGANISATIONS IN FRANCE HAVE BEEN PRESSING FOR EQUALITY OF THEIR PENSIONS WITH THE SALARIES PAID TO CIVIL SERVANTS. OTHER DEMANDS INCLUDE PENSION INCREASES FOR WAR WIDOWS AND RECOGNITION OF MEN WHO SERVED IN ALGERIA AS EX-SERVICEMEN ENTITLED TO WAS PENSIONS.

THE DEMONSTRATORS, WHO WERE ORDERLY THROUGHOUT, ASSEMBLED AT THE PARIS OPERA FOR THE MARCH WHICH TOOK THEM THROUGH THE CAPITAL'S MAIN STREETS.
