  • Description

A SMALL SAILING-BOAT WITH THE DISTRESS-SIGNAL S.O.S. PAINTED ACROSS ITS SAIL ATTRACTED THE ATTENTION OF A PARTY OF AMERICANS IN THE CARIBBEAN LAST WEEK (8 NOV.).

THE AMERICANS WERE FISHING AND SKIN DIVING FROM THEIR MOTOR LAUNCH, "MOPPIE", OFF ORANGE CAY,, THE BAHAMAS ISLAND NEAREST CUBA. THROUGH A TELESCOPE THEY SAW THAT THE SAILING BOAT CONTAINED THREE MEN, A WOMAN, AND A CHILD - CUBANS FLEEING FROM THEIR HOMELAND.

THE "MOPPIE" TOOK THE SAILING BOAT IN TOW, WHILE THE WOMAN AND CHILD WENT ABOARD THE LAUNCH. THEY SAID THAT THEY HAD BEEN WITHOUT FOOD FOR SEVERAL DAYS, BUT HAD MANAGED TO STAY ALIVE BY CATCHING FISH. JOSE RODRIGUEZ, THE SKIPPER OF THE SAILING BOAT, EXPLAINED THAT HE HAD HASTILY SET SAIL FROM CUBA NINE DAYS BEFORE TO SEEK POLITICAL ASYLUM IN MIAMI. HE HAD COME ACROSS THE OTHER TWO MEN HEADING AWAY FROM CUBA IN A SMALL ROWBOAT.
