  • Description

As the United Nations Security Council concluded Jan 5 in New York its 2-day consideration of the Cuban complaint of alleged "imminent aggression" by the United States, Britain's Mr Harold Beeley addressed the meeting.

He said the Security Council existed to deal with realities not with nightmares. There was a single particle of evidence, he said, to convincingly support the Cuban allegations. The Council had referred earlier similar complaints to the Organisation of American States which three times had tried to get Cuban co-operation in efforts at conciliation, but with no response whatever.

Similar Cuban charges before the General Assembly had been referred to its political committee which had postponed consideration of them until next March. The object of all this Cuban "activity" said Mr Beeley seemed to be inflame feeling against the United States.

A resolution by Chile and Ecuador proposed that Cuba and the US should do everything possible to resolve their differences peacefully, and that other member states should do nothing to aggravate the present Cuba-USA tension. The resolution was not pressed to a vote, nor did the Cuban charges result in the Security Council adopting any other resolution.
