  • Description

Throughout Japan yesterday (Wednesday October 21) student and labour organisations staged demonstrations and rallies as part of the national Anti-War Day. More than 50,000 riot-trained police were mobilised for the day but no incidents were reported.

The National Police Agency said students were on strike at 46 universities throughout the country. At six of them, barricades were built by the students. Some 60 Labour Unions staged strikes or held rallies.

In the past two years, Anti-War Day has brought injuries, arrests and violent clashes between demonstrators and police. The Rallies are protesting against the alleged revival of Japanese militarism, the US-Japan security treaty, American bases in Japan, the term for the return to Japan of US-held Okinawa and American involvement in Indo-China.

This year, for the first time, the issues of pollution and the welfare of the people are also being protested about.
