  • Description

North Korean earned a berth in the Olympic soccer tournament at Montreal when they eliminated Indonesia 5-4 on penalties in the final of the five-nation qualifying tournament in Jakarta on Thursday (February 26).

Pandemonium broke loose as the 120,000 crowd at the Senayan Stadium stormed onto the field as Indonesian Sueb Rizal failed to score the fifth penalty goal, conceding the closely-fought match to the North Koreans.

The match was easily the closet and most exciting of the tournament in which Malaysia, Singapore and Papua New Guinea also took part.

Ten minutes before the end of the first half North Korea's outside-right Kim Jong-Min was just wide from inside the penalty box with Indonesian goalkeeper Ronny Pasrah caught off balance.

The Indonesians were on the offensive for long periods in the second half but the Koreans managed to keep them at bay till the final whistle.

The Koreans showed more initiative during the 30 minutes of extra time. They stormed the Indonesian goal area several times but the ball was scrambled away.

The Korean penalty scores were An Se-Uk, Park Young-Hun, Na Yong-U, Kim Sung-Cop and Kim Yong-Min.
