Background: Tonight at 2200 local a violent explosion was heard in the western quarters of Beirut. It turned out to be a bomb planted in the fashionable Hamra street already decorated for Christmas. It was more precisely near the steps of a branch of the "Banque libanaise pour le Commerce". It caused only material damages to the wall against which it was planted and the bank's glass windows were broken. Security officers enquiring immediately after the blast said it must have been one or rather several dynamite sticks. There was no casualty and a passing Merced a car was slightly hit when passing by at the moment of the blast.
It is the first bombing after the wave which struck Beirut last April and in May during the clashes between the palestinian commandos and the lebanese army.
An investigation has been opened and the motive of the attack is not known yet.
