    In the United States, Southern State Governors and union leader George Meany have added their support to the pact made on the Panama Canal. The treaty was agreed to in talks between the two countries recently and it allows for a gradual handover of control to Panama. It has attracted considerable criticism, but Mr. Meany says there's no reason for the United States to retain control. Louisiana Governor, Edwin Edwards tried unsuccessfully to persuade a southern governors' conference to oppose the pact on Monday (29 August). George Lewis of NBC news reports.
