  • Description

Two thousands of cheering supporters Cuban Premier Fidel Castro, emerging from convalescence, announced the seizure of remaining US owned companies on the island. He was speaking at the closing session of the Latin-American Youth Congress early on the morning of August 7.

As Castro mounted the podium dozens of peace doves were released. They fluttered around the podium cheered on by the vast crowd.

This expropriation decree affects all property of Cuban Telephone Company, Cuban Electric Company, refineries of Standard Oil and Texaco, the marketing network of Sinclair oil and 36 US owned sugar mills.

At one point Castro faltered, his voice failed. The crowd called for him to rest. He handed the microphone to his younger brother Raul, recently returned from a trip to Russia. Raul spoke briefly, renewing the threat of the government to nationalize US property. Castro the elder was soon able to resume his speech.

Very soon after Fidel Castro's announcement of the decree militia units physically took over the properties.
