Background: Engineers say that the huge Aswan High Dam complex in the United Arab Republic will be generating electricity at full capacity next August. The prediction came after the twelfth and last of the turbines had been placed in position on May 2.

The High Dam area is probably the most heavily defended in Egypt. Work began on it in 1960 when Russian and Egyptian technicians using local labour selected the site and began laying foundations. The High Dam is considered one of the modern construction miracles of the century.

It supplies water and electricity to most parts of the U.A.R. and when completed at the end of the year it will control the entire water supply of the Nile region.

More than 46,000 workers have worked in eight hour shifts around the clock over the last ten years to complete the Dam. It now holds back 127 million acre feet of water. Next August all flood waters will be utilised to power the 12 turbines which feed electricity to most parts of Egypt. At present nine of the turbines are operating.
