  • Description

THE FRENCH TRAINING VESSEL "JEANNE D'ARC", CARRYING A COMPLEMENT OF 154 OFFICER CADETS, LEFT THE HARBOUR OF BREST, NOV 21, ON HER 24TH AND FINAL WORLD CRUISE. WHEN SHE RETURNS ON JUNE 6 NEXT YEAR, AFTER ROUNDING AFRICA AND AUSTRALIA, HER DUTIES WILL BE TAKEN OVER BY A HELICOPTER-CARRIER.

BEFORE LEAVING PORT IN A FINE DRIZZLE, THE CADETS WERE ADDRESSED BY ADMIRAL CABANIER WHO SAID THAT, IN THE FACE OF PESSIMISTIC COMMENTS ON THE NAVY'S "DIN FUTURE IN THE ATOMIC AGE", THE FRENCH FLEET WAS BEING REORGANISED ON THE BASIS OF MEN MILITARY CONCEPTS. HE SENT THE YOUNG MEN ON THEIR WAY WITH A QUOTATION FROM CARDINAL RICHELIEU: "THE CAPTAINS OF THE SEA SHALL BE MEN OF COURAGE".
