  • Description

AN UNWILLING VICTIM OF THE FIGHTING IN CYPRUS ... A GREEK FARMER, WHOSE HOLDINGS LIE CLOSE TO THE KYRENIA ROAD PASS HAS LEFT HIS FARM AND FLED TO THE TOWN OF DICKAMO. THIS FOLLOWS HEAVY FIGHTING BETWEEN GREEK AND TURKISH CYPRIOTS ENTRENCHED ON THE HILLS ABOVE THE KYRENIA PASS.

THE UNITED NATIONS FORCE ON THE ISLAND HAS PROMISED THE FARMER FULL PROTECTION IF HE RETURNS. HOWEVER HE HAS REFUSED, AND CANADIAN AND BRITISH SOLDIERS HAVE TAKEN OVER THE RUNNING OF THE FARM.

MEANWHILE THE SITUATION ON THE KYRENIA PASS REMAINS TENSE, WITH SPORADIC BURSTS OF GUNFIRE CONSTANTLY DISTURBING THE OUTWARD PEACE OF THIS MOUNTAIN AREA. EARLIER THIS WEEK AN ARMOURED CAR CARRYING MAJOR PATRICK TREMBLAY OF THE CANADIAN FORCES WAS FIRED UPON AS IT MADE ITS WAY UP TOWARDS THIS FARM. THE CANADIANS RETURNED THE FIRE. MAJOR TREMBLAY SAID THAT HIS VEHICLE WAS ENGAGED IN "QUITE ACCURATE" FIRE FROM THE TOP OF THE SURROUNDING HILLS.

(THE KYRENIA ROAD IS BEING HELD BY TURKISH CYPRIOTS WHO REFUSE TO GIVE IT UP DESPITE THE URGING OF THE UNITED NATIONS. GREEK AND TURKISH CYPRIOTS HAVE DUG THEMSELVES IN ON THREE PEAKS KNOWN AS "GIN", "BRANDY" AND "WHISKY").
