  • Description

Colombian President Alfonso Lopez Michelsen met with United States President Gerald Ford in the White House in Washington on Friday (26 September) for the second time in two days.

The two men discussed the problem of the Panama canal Zone, among other things.

The United States and Panama planned to resume negotiations over a new canal treaty this month. A major unresolved issue is how much territory the U.S. should retain for miliary bases inside the 550 square mile (1,320 square km) Canal Zone.

Panama wants to restrict the U.S. to three military bases well away from urban area but the U.S. wants to keep at least ten of its fourteen bases as well as the zone.

There is also disagreement over how long the new treaty should last.

The U.S. has administered the canal zone as sovereign territory since 1903.

Panamanian Head of Government, Brigadier General Omar Torrijos, has claimed widespread support among Latin American nations for his stand on the Canal Zone issue.

Columbia is on panama's southern border.
