  • Description

National Service was introduced for women in Madagascar on Friday (2 Feb) in a full scale Government move to replace all French workers with Madagascar citizens.

Two days earlier, the Government introduced obligatory national service for men aged 20 to 29 to replace French military personnel stationed throughout Madagascar. The mobilisation of the women is much lass strict than the national service scheme for the men. their gentler 'call up' is not compulsory, and if they pass their necessary tests, they will go into schools to replace the existing French teachers.

As soon as it was announced that the voluntary conscription was available to women, over 100 recruits enrolled at the Government offices in lananarive.

Not that the agreement of co-operation has ended between Madagascar and France, the Government of Madagascar wants to fill all French-held jobs with its own citizens.

SYNOPSIS: In Madagascar, the national drive to recruit women for a mild form of national service has begun. On Friday, it was announced that conscription was available to all women aged between 20 and 29, and by the end of the same day, more than 100 women had been recruited.

Unlike the new conscription for men, call-up for women is not mandatory, and if they are passed by the examination board, they are given a term of civilian work.

These women will teach infants, and, the Government plans that all French-held positions will eventually be filled by its own citizens.
