  • Description

While Pathet Lao troops gained ground in the north, and the world worried about the outcome of the political crisis, the Royal Laotian Army held an impressive parade in Vientiane, Mar 23.

Commanded by General Bounleuth, Chief of Army Operations, the parade celebrated the anniversary of the Royal Army's foundation. King Sri Savang Vatthana and his Queen flew in from Luang Prabang, the Royal capital, to take the salute. He afterwards flew on to Savannakhet for a similar celebration.

Latest reports from Laos indicate a lull in the fighting. Gunfire was heard in Vientiane Mar 28, but Government spokesmen hastened to explain that it was caused by Royal troops on manoeuvres in the area.

Members of the South East Treaty Organization meeting in Bangkok Mar 28, were discussing the publication of a resolution which would imply that the eight member-nations are prepared to go to war in Laos unless Russia agrees to an early cease-fire. France opposes this move because she feels it would jeopardize britain's current negotiations with Russia.
