Background: In the north Italian city of Milan, vibrations caused by traffic are endangering the historic Duomo Cathedral. The cathedral's foundations... according to architects...already show signs of being affected by the constant movement of vehicles in and around the city's central square, and the authorities on Friday (8 September) had diverted traffic away from the area. They plan to allow only tramcar to use the square in future. The cathedral, one of the most ambitious architectural undertakings of the latter Middle Ages, was begun in 1386 by Gian Galeazzo Visconti, and is the third-largest in the world. Capable of holding a congregation of twenty thousand people, it was built partly of brick and partly granite, and completed only last century. The Duomo Cathedral is of elaborate Gothic style and is adorned on the outside with a profusion of turrets, pinnacles, and more than three thousand statues.
