    AUSTRIAN POLICE AND TROOPS WERE TODAY SEARCHING FOR VICTIMS OF THE MASSIVE LANDSLIDE OF MUD AND ROCKS WHICH SWEPT THROUGH THE TYROLEAN HOLIDAY VILLAGE OF INZING YESTERDAY (26 JULY). EARLY REPORTS SAID TWO MEN DIED IN THE LANDSLIDE AND POLICE FEARED MORE BODIES WERE STILL BURIED UNDER THE DEBRIS.

    HUNDREDS OF TONS OF EARTH, LOOSENED BY TORRENTIAL THUNDERSTORMS, SWEPT INTO THE VILLAGE YESTERDAY. THE MAIN AUSTRIA-SWITZERLAND RAILWAY, WHICH RUNS THROUGH THE VILLAGE, WAS BLOCKED AND EXPRESS TRAINS WERE REROUTED.

    ONE OF THE DEAD MEN, 36-YEAR-OLD JOSEPH OETHER, A DOCTOR FROM INNSBRUCK, WAS SWIMMING IN THE CROWDED VILLAGE POOL WHEN THE MUD HIT THE VILLAGE. HIS 13-YEAR-OLD SON AND AN UNKNOWN NUMBER OF OTHER PEOPLE WERE STILL MISSING, POLICE SAID. THE OTHER DEAD MAN WAS A BULLDOZER DRIVER - KLAUS KOFLER.

    POLICE AND ARMY UNITS AIDED BY HELICOPTER WERE TODAY SEARCHING THROUGH A LAYER OF MUD AND ROCK UP TO NINE FEET (THREE METRES) DEEP.

    THE LANDSLIDE WAS ONE OF SEVERAL WHICH STRUCK VILLAGES IN THE INNSBRUCK AREA, BLOCKING ROADS, DAMAGING CARS AND CUTTING OFF HOUSES. BUT NO CASUALTIES WERE REPORTED EXCEPT AT INZING.
