  • Description

Mr. Edward Heath, Conservative Party leader, is Britain's new Prime Minister. In yesterday's (Thursday 18 June) General Elections the Labour Party led by Mr. Harold Wilson was replaced as Government in a sensational surge of support for the Conservatives, which resulted in a 42-seat "Tory" majority.

Today (Friday 19 June) a removal van began the transfer of furniture from Mr. Heath's "Albany House" apartment in Piccadilly to the Prime Minister's residence at Number 10 Downing Street, already vacated by Mr. Wilson.

Early in the afternoon Mr. Heath left his apartment to the cheers of a large and enthusiastic crowd of supporters, and made his way to the Conservative Party headquarters in Smith Square to thank the workers for their help in the victory.

Shortly before 7 o'clock Mr. Heath was called to Buckingham Palace by the Queen and invited to form a new government. When he left some 15 minutes later on his way to Downing street a crowd of several hundred burst into loud cheering.

More supporters in Downing street broke through police cordons as the Prime Minister arrived at his new residence. Mr. Heath spoke to the crowd before entering Number Ten.

The Conservative Party has returned to power in Britain after six years in opposition, and at a time when newspaper opinion polls were suggesting a clear Labour victory.
