  • Description

Over 1M Filipinos greeted President Eisenhower June 14 at Manila on stage one of the Far East tour. The President looked jubilant with the welcome. But two days later June 16 came the decision to cancel the high-point of the tour: Tokyo.

President Carlos Garcia greeted Eisenhower - the first U.S. chief of state to visit the new Republic. Also greeting him - U.S. Ambassador John Hickerson, the diplomatic corps and government officials.

A minority group displayed anti-US posters saying: We want economic freedom" and "America, Pay Our Claims." Garcia welcomed the President as the leader of a nation standing for freedom, democracy and the brotherhood of men. "You are at home here," he said. In his reply, Mr. Eisenhower recalled his stay in the Philippines as an assistant to General Douglas MacArthur - whose garrison was later overwhelmed by the Japanese invaders in the weeks after Pearl Harbour.
