  • Description

SOUTH KOREA'S FORMER PRIME MINISTER, JOHN CHANG, WAS RELEASED FROM PRISON ON MONDAY BY THE RULING MILITARY JUNTA THAT SENT HIM THERE.

CROWDS OF FRIENDS AND PRESSMEN SURROUNDED HIM AS HE WALKED OUT OF SEOUL'S WEST GATE PRISON 49 DAYS AFTER HIS ARREST. FIRST STOP FOR MR. CHANG WAS THE LOCAL CHURCH AND A FEW MOMENTS OF SILENT PRAYER BEFORE RETURNING HOME.

MR. CHANG WAS SENTENCED TO TEN YEARS IN PRISON LAST SEPTEMBER FOR CONTRIBUTING 770 DOLLARS TOWARDS AN ABORTIVE PLOT TO OVERTHROW THE MILITARY REGIME. THE GOVERNMENT ORDERED A STAY OF EXECUTION OF HIS SENTENCE LAST FRIDAY - BUT MR. CHANG INSISTED ON REMAINING BEHIND BARS UNLESS HE WAS ASSURED THAT HE WOULD HAVE THE RIGHT TO APPEAL AGAINST THE SENTENCE AND CLEAR HIS NAME.

THE SOUTH KOREAN GOVERNMENT RELEASED EX-PREMIER CHANG BY PUTTING UP BAIL ITSELF. THIS WAS SAID TO CLEAR THE WAY FOR HIM TO APPEAL WITHOUT RETURNING TO PRISON.
