Background: Ugandan President Idi Amin arrived in the Syrian capital, Damascus, on Saturday (5 June), for a three-day official visit and to hold talks with Syrian leaders on the Middle East crisis, the Lebanese situation and Afro-Arab solidarity.

He was met at the airport by President Hafez al-Assad, Premier Mahmoud al-Ayoubi, and other ministers and officials. His visit to Syria was the second since the 1973 Arab war with Israel.

According to uganda Radio, President Amin is a strong supporter of Syria's latest intervention in Lebanon.

The following day (6 June), President Amin told newsmen that the current civil strife in Lebanon was the result of "an imperialist-Zionist conspiracy". He made his remarks during a visit to Kuneitra, a town on the Golan Heights devastated during the 1973 war.

He claimed "the conspiracy" in Lebanon was aimed at destroying Arab unity and pledged his country's support to Syria. He also expressed confidence that the occupied Arab territories would eventually be returned.

He went on to say that the liberation of Kuneitra was a victory for the Syrian and entire African nation and that the destruction of Egyptian cities and Kuneitra were "the ugliest acts ever committed in human history".

During his stay, the Ugandan leader held talks with Syrian leaders on the Middle East crisis, the situation in Lebanon and Afro-Arab solidarity.

According to uganda Radio, President Amin is a strong supporter of Syria's latest intervention in Lebanon, and the day after his arrival the president told newsmen accompanying him on a visit to the Golan Heights town of Kuneitra that his country would support Syria in its military intervention there. He went on to describe the civil strife in Lebanon as an "imperialist-Zionist conspiracy".
