  • Description

Striking miners and delegates from illegal "workers commissions" met in two secret locations near Pamplona in northern Spain on Monday (20 January) to decide on a course of action in support of 1,000 miners suspended without pay.

The potash miners have been locked-out for over two months.

More than 100 of their colleagues are engaged on an extended sit-in at the bottom of a mine near Pamplona, and last week 20,000 workers heeded a general strike call in sympathy.

Both strikers and labour organisations are illegal in Spain. At least 80 strikes were made during violent demonstrations following last week's general strike, and on Monday (20 January) a man was shot dead by civil police in Bilbao whilst allegedly distributing pamphlets in support of the strikers at Pamplona. His death sparked off a student riot in the port on Tuesday.
