• Short Summary

THE PRIME MINISTER OF SOUTHERN RHODESIA, MR. WINSTON FIELD, HAS REPORTED TO HIS CABINET FOLLOWING?

  • Description

THE PRIME MINISTER OF SOUTHERN RHODESIA, MR. WINSTON FIELD, HAS REPORTED TO HIS CABINET FOLLOWING HIS RECENT VISIT TO LONDON. THERE HE MET THE BRITISH PRIME MINISTER, SIR ALEC DOUGLAS-HOME AND OTHER SENIOR BRITISH DIPLOMATS WITH A VIEW TO INDEPENDENCE FOR THE TERRITORY.

TUESDAY'S MEETING OF THE CABINET WAS AN ALL-DAY AFFAIR AND THE DISCUSSIONS STAYED SECRET. MR. FIELD'S PARTY IS KNOWN TO BE DEEPLY DIVIDED OVER THE ISSUE OF INDEPENDENCE: THE EXTREME RIGHT-WING HAVING CALLED FOR THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE WITHOUT BRITAIN'S CONSENT. MR. IAN SMITH, MINISTER OF THE TREASURY, HAS STATED THAT A UNILATERAL DECLARATION WOULD BE NO MORE THAN A "THREE DAYS' WONDER" IN LONDON.
