  • Description

A CROWD OF MORE THAN 16,000 INCLUDING PRESIDENT KAUNDA, WATCHED THE JOHN CHARLES ELEVEN DEFEAT ZAMBIA BY TWO GOALS TO ONE IN THE OPENING MATCH OF THEIR TOUR AT THE DAG HAMMERSKJOELD STADIUM IN NDOLA ON SUNDAY (11 JUNE).

IT IS A TOUR WHICH VERY NEARLY NEVER CAME ABOUT. ONLY AN ELEVENTH HOUR DECISION BY THE ZAMBIAN GOVERNMENT FOLLOWING THE BRITISH SIDE'S CANCELLATION OF A MATCH IN RHODESIA SAVED IT.

A SPOKESMAN SAID AT THE TIME OF THE THREATENED CANCELLATION THAT ZAMBIA REGARDED THE TEAM, WHICH HAS A MAINLY WELSH BACKGROUND, AS BEING ON A GOOD-WILL MISSION AND HAD DECIDED TO LET THEM COME TO ZAMBIA.

"BUT," HE SAID, "WE CANNOT ALLOW THEM TO DO SO AFTER COURTING FRIENDSHIP WITH TRAITORS TO HUMANITY".

ON SUNDAY THE TWO CHARLES, JOHN AND MEL EASILY DOMINATED THE ZAMBIAN GOALMOUTH, WHERE THEIR HEIGHT GAVE THEM GREATER DOMINANCE OVER THEIR OPPONENTS.

MEL CHARLES HEADED IN THEIR FIRST GOAL AFTER 12 MINUTES AND JOHN'S WINNING GOAL FOUR MINUTES FROM FULL-TIME CAME FROM A HEADER AS WELL.

THE ZAMBIAN'S ONLY GOAL CAME AFTER 30 MINUTES, ONE OF THE FEW OCCASIONS THE JOHN CHARLES DEFENCE WAS CAUGHT OUT OF POSITION.

THEY FAILED TO GET BACK FAST ENOUGH ON A LONG HIGH PASS UPFIELD AND BONIFACE SIMUTOWE NIPPED IN QUICKLY TO TAKE THE BALL AWAY FROM THEM AND RUN IN ALONE.
