  • Description

The President of Chad, N'Gartha Tombalbaye, opened Chad National Tree Week on Saturday (July 13) by planting a tree at Walia on the outskirts of the capital, N'Djamena.

He was joined by Government ministers and foreign diplomats in planting trees in specially prepared areas around the capital, which are going to be gradually reafforested.

It's all part of a general plan to try to hold back the relentless advance of the Sahara desert which has been spreading south during the years of drought in the area.

The tree planting campaign was begun in Chad last year.

Later in the day president Tombalbaye went to the Place de L'Indenpendence in the capital to plant a municipal tree. Then the President travelled round other tree planting sites near the capital.

SYNOPSIS: Large crowds gathered outside the Chad capital N'Djamena, on Saturday for the official ceremony to open the Chad 1974 National Tree Week.

The Minister of Waters, Forests, Fishing and Hunting, Desande Togbe, was President of the Committee organising the tree week. He said the effort was an example of Chad socialism.

The first tree was planted at Walia by president N'Garta Tombalbaye. The Chad leader said the tree planting week was part of plans to combat the southward march of the Sahara desert, which was menacing the country more and more.

Foreign diplomats in chad planted many trees and they joined with members of the chad Government and other officials.

Most people planted at least five trees. This is the second national tree week in Chad - country that has suffered badly from years of drought.

Later President Tombalbaye toured sites around the capital where trees were being planted.

He also planted a "municipal" tree in Independence Square in N'Djamena.
