  • Description

Stephen Holland, the 15 year old Australian schoolboy who broke two world swimming records in one race on Sunday (August 5) is now training with the Australian team in preparation for the inaugural World Swimming Championships in Belgrade next month.

Holland, who has no international experience, was selected for the Australian team, less than 24 hours after he had slashed 14.8 secs. off the 1,500 metres (yards) freestyle record, 'breaking the 800 meters record by 6.2 secs. in the process.

Holland nosed ahead of Olympic four hundred metre champion Brad Cooper at the 200 metre mark and from then on swam virtually unpaced.

Mr. Syd Grange the Australian National Swimming Union secretary said it was probably one of the great swims of all times.

Stephen Holland, who is the son of a prominent Australian Swimming official, has been outstanding in local junior competitions.

He has been swimming for five years and early in his career he trained by correspondence with leading Sydney coach Don Talbot.

Holland is likely to be the centre of attraction in Belgrade following the absence of the Australian triple Olympic champion and multi world record holder Shane Gould who is resting from competitive swimming.
