  • Description

A GENERAL STRIKE BY 20,000 ICELANDIC WORKERS HAS ALMOST BROUGHT THE COUNTRY'S CAPITAL, REYKJAVIK, TO A STANDSTILL. THE STRIKE WAS CALLED BY THE ICELANDIC FEDERATION OF LABOUR, AND IS IN SUPPORT OF A CLAIM FOR A COST OF LIVING WAGE INCREASE FOLLOWING THE DEVALUATION OF THE KRONA IN DECEMBER LAST YEAR.

IN THE CAPITAL WORK AT ALL FISHERIES AND OTHER FACTORIES CAME TO A STOP WHEN THE STRIKE WAS ANNOUNCED LAST SUNDAY. THERE WERE NO NEWSPAPERS, THE TRANSPORT OF PETROL AND HEATING OIL STOPPED, AND ALL INTERNAL AIR FLIGHTS WERE HALTED. EXTERNAL FLIGHTS ARE STILL OPERATING, HOWEVER.

OUTSIDE REYKJAVIK SUPPORT FOR THE STRIKE WAS NOT AS STRONG, AND COASTAL FISHIRIES WERE STILL AT WORK.

NEGOTIATIONS BETWEEN THE UNIONS AND EMPLOYERS HAVE BEEN CALLED FREQUENTLY SINCE THE STRIKE BEGAN, BUT SO FAR NO SETTLEMENT HAS BEEN REACHED. THE NEGOTIATIONS HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT UNDER THE AEGIS OF STATE NEGOTIATOR MR. T. HJARTARSON. MEMBERS OF THE STRIKE CONTROL COMMITTEE HAVE BEEN PATROLLING STREETS TO ENSURE THAT THE STRIKE IS OBSERVED.

THE ICELAND GOVERNMENT IS OPPOSING ANY COST OF LIVING INCREASE, CLAIMING IT WOULD ONLY CONTRIBUTE TO THE COUNTRY'S PRESENT INFLATION. BUT THE UNIONS REGARD SUCH AN INCREASE AS NECESSARY TO SAFEGUARD THE WORKERS' STANDARD OF LIVING.
