    TRANSCRIPTS:

SEQ 14: MALE RESIDENT: "IN THE FIRST PLACE, I WAS TOTALLY IN FAVOUR OF THIS AT THE ORIGINAL PARISH COUNCIL MEETING BUT I FEEL VERY STRONGLY ABOUT THE BEAUTY OF THE VILLAGE AND ITS PRESERVATION AND I FEEL THAT THE FILM COMPANY, INSPITE OF THEIR ASSURANCE THAT THEY WERE ONLY GOING TO BUILD A LOW WALL, HAVE CHANGED THE FACE OF THE VILLAGE AND IS SHUDDER TO THINK WHAT THEY ARE GOING TO DO IN FUTURE."

SEQ 15: WOMAN RESIDENT: "WELL I FEEL VERY SORRY THAT ITS HAPPENED, NOT SO MUCH THAT THE FILM IS COMING HERE BUT THE WAY THEY'RE COMING HERE, AND THE WAY THEY'RE GOING ABOUT THINGS AND IT'S VERY DIFFICULT TO GET ANY KIND OF TRUTH OUT OF THEM WHEN THEY SAY THEY'RE GOING TO DO ONE THING, IT'S FAR MORE INVOLVED AND COMPLICATED."

SEQ 16: MALE RESIDENT: "I WAS AGAINST THE FILMING AT THE START, HOWEVER WE WERE GIVEN ASSURANCES AT A VILLAGE MEETING, BACK LAST MARCH, AND I WAS PREPARED TO RESERVE MY JUDGMENT AND THE FILMING WAS GOING TO GO AHEAD. HOWEVER, DESPITE ASSURANCES GIVEN AT A SECOND VILLAGE MEETING THAT THIS WAS NOT GOING TO DISRUPT US SERIOUSLY FOR MORE THAN FOUR OR FIVE DAYS, WE'RE NOW INFORMED THAT WE'RE GOING TO HAVE TWO MONTHS CHAOS IN THIS VILLAGE. THIS WE FEEL IS VERY BAD, VERY UNFAIR OF THE FILM COMPANY TO HAVE DONE THIS TO US IN A WAY THAT WE FEEL IS UNDER HAND."

SEQ 18: INTERVIEWER: "MR BREMMER SOME OF THE PEOPLE HERE REGRET THAT PERMISSION WAS EVER GIVEN FOR YOU TO FILM THEY'D BE DELIGHTED IF YOU WERE TO MOVE OUT TODAY. NOW HOW DO YOU FEEL WORKING IN THIS. KIND OF ATMOSPHERE?"

MR BREMMER: THAT'S RATHER A DIFFICULT QUESTION. SOME PEOPLE ARE RATHER UNHAPPY ABOUT IT - THEY DON'T LIKE THE DISTURBANCES IN THE VILLAGE, THEY'VE SEEN WHAT'S HAPPENING. ABOUT MOVING OUT TODAY - NO - WE COULDN'T DO IT FOR THEM NOW.

INTERVIEWER: THERE'S BEEN A LOT OF CRITICISM ABOUT THE WAY THE COMPANY'S GONE ABOUT ITS ARRANGEMENTS - NOT KEEPING PEOPLE IN THE PICTURE, CHANGING PLANS, MAKING MORE ALTERATIONS, TAKING LONGER - THESE ARE ALL THINGS PEOPLE HAVE TOLD ME. WHAT DO YOU SAY TO ALL THIS?

MR BREMMER: WELL FIRSTLY THIS HAPPENS EVERY TIME YOU START A FILM, ESPECIALLY A FILM OF THIS SIZE BECAUSE ONE CAN'T REALLY START ON SCHEDULE, ONE CAN'T REALLY START SCHEDULING NOW. MY SECRETARY IN LONDON THIS MORNING WAS ASKING ME "WHEN DO WE START MAKING OUT THE FINAL SHOOTING SCHEDULE". YOU CAN'T, WE ARE REWRITING THE SCRIPT - THEY ARE REWRITING THE SCRIPT NOW IN HOLLYWOOD.

INTERVIEWER: ORIGINALLY THERE WAS TALK OF FOUR WEEKS FILMING, NOW ITS SIX WEEKS AND COULD POSSIBLY BE MUCH LONGER.

MR BREMMER: WELL THE FOUR WEEKS FILMING DOES NOT APPLY TO CASTLE COOMBE, WHICH IS STILL ABOUT SEVEN DAYS IN CASTLE COOMBE ITSELF, THE REST IS DO AROUND THE AREA WHEN WE'RE NOT IN THE VILLAGE.

INTERVIEWER: I WAS TOLD THAT THE STRUCTURAL ALTERATIONS THAT YOU'VE MADE WERE BEGUN WITHOUT PLANNING PERMISSION BEING OBTAINED. WAS THIS RIGHT?

MR BREMMAN: THIS IS WRONG BECAUSE I'VE STARTED WITH THE PEOPLE DIRECTLY CONCERNED AND I'VE FOLLOWED UP WITH OTHER PEOPLE THAT I'VE FOUND BE INVOLVED, CONSULTED THEM AND TALKED TO THEM, OR WRITTEN TO THEM AND GOT THEIR PERMISSION TO GO AHEAD FROM THERE ON.

INTERVIEWER: YOU'RE REALLY HAVING QUITE A LARGE EFFECT ON THIS TINY VILLAGE, YOU'LL CONTINUE TO DO SO FOR QUITE A LONG TIME, WHAT WILL YOU BE GIVING IN RETURN?

MR BREMMER: ONE CAN'T SAY WHAT WE WILL BE GIVING IN RETURN. WE HAVEN'T PROMISED ANYTHING FROM THE START - WE ARE PAYING THE VARIOUS PEOPLE WHOSE LAND WE'RE USING - I MEAN THIS IS THE NORMAL THING ANYBODY DOES WHEN THEY GO FILMING ANYWHERE - YOUR TV UNIT NO LESS. WE ARE COMPENSATING WHATEVER PEOPLE WE THINK FOR WHAT WE THINK THEY SHOULD GET. WE'RE NOT TRYING TO DEFRAUD ANYBODY OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT - WE'RE PLAYING THINGS STRAIGHT.

Background: CASTLE COOMBE, VOTED AS "ENGLAND PRETTIEST VILLAGE" HAS BEEN INVADED BY A FILM COMPANY - AN INVASION THAT HAS RAISED A VILLAGE CONTROVERSY OF FIERCE PROPORTIONS.

A SNUG LITTLE VILLAGE IN A WOODED WILTSHIRE VALLEY, CASTLE COOMBE IS BEING TEMPORARILY TRANSFORMED INTO A MID-VICTORIAN FISHING PORT OF PUDDLE-ON-THE-MARSH FOR A FIVE MILLION POUND HOLLYWOOD MUSICAL CALLED "THE STORY OF DR DOOLITTLE" BEING MADE BY THE 20TH CENTURY FOX.

THE FORMERLY CLOSELY-KNIT VILLAGE COMMUNITY IS NOW SPLIT OVER WHETHER THR TRANSFORMATION IS GOING TO RUIN THE APPEARANCE AND REPUTATION OF THE VILLAGE. THE CRUX OF THE CONTROVERSY HAS BEEN THE FACELIFT GIVEN BY THE FILM COMPANY TO THE RIVER BANKS SOUTH OF THE VILLAGE'S HUMP-BACKED BRIDGE. THE GRASSY, BUTTERCUP VERGES HAVE BEEN REPLACED BY CEMENTED STONE WALLS TO GIVE THE ILLUSION OF A SEAFRONT. DURING THE FILMING, WHICH BEGINS IN THREE WEEKS TIME, FIVE FISHING BOATS WILL BE FLOATED IN THE STREAM AFTER THE WATER LEVEL HAS BEEN RAISED WITH A DAM OF SANDBAGS.

SOME RESIDENTS WHO WERE ASKED FOR COMMENTS ON THE SITUATION HAD THIS TO SAY.

THE FILM COMPANY'S ENGLISH PRODUCTION MANAGER, MR JOHN BREMMER, WAS INTERVIEWED AND HAD THIS TO SAY:
IF NOTHING ELSE, THE FILM MAKERS WILL BE REMEMBERED FOR AT LEAST ONE IMPROVEMENT - BETTER TELEVISION RECEPTION. A LARGE AERIAL HAS BEEN ERECTED ON THE TOP OF A WOODED HILL BEHIND THE VILLAGE WITH A "PIPED" SYSTEM TO THE COTTAGES.
