  • Description

KING FREDERICK OF DENMARK AND HIS DAUGHTER PRINCESS BENEDICTE WERE AMONG THE THOUSANDS OF SPECTATORS WHO WATCHED QUEEN ELIZABETH TAKE THE SALUTE AT THE ANNUAL TROOPING-THE-COLOUR CEREMONY IN LONDON TODAY (SATURDAY) TO MARK THE QUEEN'S OFFICIAL BIRTHDAY.

THE 210-OLD CEREMONY IS THE MOST COLOURFUL IN THE BRITISH ARMY, AND RECALLS THE DAYS WHEN RULING MONARCHS LED THEIR TROOPS INTO BATTLE. AT THIS YEAR'S CEREMONY THE COLOUR WAS TROOPED BY THE 1ST BATTALION OF THE IRISH GUARDS.

THE QUEEN WORE THE SCARLET TUNIC OF A GUARDSMAN, AND A BLACK TRICORNE HAT. SHE RODE A GREY HORSE AT THE HEAD OF THE GLITTERING PAGEANT WHICH MARCHED TO THE MUSIC OF THE MASSED BANDS OF THE HOUSEHOLD BRIGADE - ONE OF THE LARGEST BANDS IN EXISTENCE, COMPRISING OVER 400 MUSICIANS.

THE TROOPING-THE-COLOUR CEREMONY, WHICH IS ONE OF THE GREAT TOURIST ATTRACTIONS OF THE YEAR IN BRITAIN, LASTED ABOUT AN HOUR, WITH THE COLOUR BEING PARADED BEFORE THE QUEEN FIRST IN SLOW TIME, AND THEN IN QUICK TIME.

AFTERWARDS, RIDING AT THE HEAD OF HER TROOPS, QUEEN ELIZABETH RETURNED TO BUCKINGHAM PALACE.
