Background: Large crowds thronged the Government Agent's office in Colombo, Nov. 19 to watch nominations for the forthcoming by-election to fill the seat in Ceylon's Parliament of assassinated Prime Minister Bandaranaike.

The Attanagalla constituency is being contested by the Premier's widow, Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike -- and Mrs. H.M.de Silva, another widow, whose husband was killed in police action during last year's emergency.

Mrs.de Silva, mother of seven children, handed her own nomination paper to the Government Agent. Strict police precautions were taken after an attempt was made to kidnap Mrs.de Silva on nomination day. Mrs.Bandaranaike did not turn up at the agent's office - but was represented by her agent.

It was alleged in Parliament recently that Mrs.de Silva's husband was buried without an inquest being held - and what she does not know where her husband has been buried.

Through her nomination she wants to "cry for justice for thousands widowed during the emergency". For Mrs. Bandaranaike, the contest represents "her duty" to her murdered husband.

Apart from personal reasons, the by-election represents the conflict between the Buddhists, alleged to be behind the Premier's death, and groups opposing communalism by the Buddhist way of life.

On Nov 23, Ceylon's Finance Minister, Stanley de Zoysa, resigned and in a statement denied he had interfered with investigations into the killing of Premier Bandaranaike. His resignation came shortly after the arrest of his brother, Dick de Zoysa, in connection with the murder.
