  • Description

Members of the Arab League met in a special session in Cairo on Tuesday (2 September) to discuss the peace agreement signed between Egypt and Israel.

The agreement solely affects the two nations and the other members are anxious to know the full details and Egypt's reasons for signing.

Egypt, even before the agreement was signed, embarked on a diplomatic mission to assure other members of the league that it would still support them in their fight against Israel.

The agreement came in for severe criticism from the Palestinian commandos, a frosty silence from Syria and scorn from Libya. Syria's President announced he was too busy to receive either Dr. Henry Kissinger, whose shuttle brought about the signing, or the Egyptian Vice President, Hosni Mubarak, who had brought a message on the accord from his President Anwar Sadat.

The Libyan leader Mummar Gaddafi said the Arab-Israeli conflict could not be halted by treaties or agreements, either secret or public.
