  • Description

A PREFABRICATED LIGHTHOUSE, CLAIMED TO BE THE LARGEST OF ITS TYPE IN THE WORLD, IS TAKING SHAPE IN THE SHELTERED WATERS OF DUBLIN HARBOUR. IT WILL REPLACE THE LIGHTSHIP ON KISH BANK, WHICH GUARDS THE ENTRANCE TO THE PORT OF DUBLIN.

THE FILM SHOWS WORK ON STAGE ONE OF THE PROJECT, A 2-THOUSAND-500-TON CONCRET CAISSON, WHICH WILL FORM THE BASE OF THE 170-FOOT HIGH (51 METRES) STRUCTURE. THE DESIGN FOR THE LIGHTHOUSE HAS BEEN EMPLOYED IN FIVE PLACES ALONG THE COAST OF SCANDINAVIA, AND, THROUGH TESTS AND EXPERIENCE, HAS PROVED ITS STABILITY IN ALL TYPES OF WEATHER.

WHEN COMPLETED THE CAISSONS WILL BE TOWED 11 MILES OUT TO SEA AND SUNK ON KISH BANK. THE TOWER WILL THEN BE RAISED "TELESCOPICALLY" ON THE CONCRETE BASE. THE TOWER, WITH LIVING QUARTERS FOR THE KEEPERS, WILL STAND 107 FEET, (32-METRES), ABOVE SEA LEVEL AT MEAN TIDE. TO ASSIST WITH SUPPLY AND THE TRANSFER OF STAFF TO THE LIGHTHOUSE, A HELICOPTER PLATFORM IS TO BE BUILT ABOVE THE LANTERN CHAMBER.

THE TOTAL WEIGHT OF THE LIGHTHOUSE WILL BE 6-THOUSAND-500-TONS, AND IT IS EXPECTED TO BE READY FOR OPERATIONS BY THE END OF 1964.
