  • Description

A quarter of a million people thronged Taipei yesterday (10 October) for celebrations marking Taiwan's national day. The huge crowds at the anniversary rally pledged their support to the government of Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek.

Generalissimo Chiang hasn't made a public appearance for two years -- he's currently recovering from illness. So his elder son, Prime Minister Chiang Ching-Kuo, was the principal government figure at the rally.

But a message from the President was read out, in which the veteran leader declared: "We are resolved to do our utmost for our national cause and we are convinced that final victory will be ours."
SYNOPSIS: Despite a series of recent diplomatic setbacks, Taiwan is still reportedly making economic progress. Though only thirty nations now recognise Taiwan diplomatically, this hasn't prevented trade from continuing to increase. Last year, foreign trade reached a new record level. And even though United States economic aid was cut off in 1965, the Taiwanese have managed to maintain an annual economic growth rate of over ten per cent.
