TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 3: WALDHEIM: "Mr. President, in the past weeks we have all recognised that we are dealing with a situation which is as unusual as it is dangerous. We have all recognised that the release of the hostages is of primary and urgent importance. We have also recognised that there are many other aspects of this problem which need to be seriously considered. The resolution which the Council has just unanimously adopted reflects the concern of the council for the immediate demands of the situation as well as for the point of view of the parties concerned. I earnestly hope that this unanimous decision of the Council will provide the basis on which we will proceed towards the peaceful solution, which is unquestionably in the interests of all concerned."

SEQ. 4: McHENRY: "We hope that this call by the Security Council will be heeded and carried out by the government of Iran in a matter of hours. Whatever the time required, we urge the Secretary General in the exercise of this good offices to provide all humanitarian support possible to those being detained against their will. We remain deeply concerned for their safety, their well-being, their health on this their thirtieth day of suffering and isolation."

Background: The United Nations Security Council on Tuesday (4 December) agreed unanimously to call on the Iranian government to release the American hostages being held in the United States Embassy in Teheran. The decision came in the thirtieth day of the embassy occupation. The fifteen nations council also urged the governments of Iran and the United States "to exercise the utmost restraint in the prevailing situation". It was a clear reference to threat from the United States to implement its right to self-defence if the Iranians go ahead and try the hostages on charges of espionage.

SYNOPSIS: China's delegate at the Security Council, Chen Chu announced that the final vote on the resolution aimed to defuse the Iranian situation would be taken. According to a western source the United states was objecting to a text circulated the night before which didn't mention its right to self-defence. But the dispute was settled and the resolution adopted unanimously.

United Nations Secretary General Kurt Waldheim and the United States Ambassador donald McHenry both said they hoped Iran would comply with the decision as soon as possible.
