Like any other woman, Princess Margaret took advantage today (22 November) of her visit to New York City to visit some of the city's famous Fifth Avenue stores. While she was thus occupied Lord Snowdon slipped away to neighbouring Madison Avenue and Brooks Brothers, one of New York's best known men's clothing stores.
It was a dark, rainy day, which may have reminded the royal pair of home. Despite the weather, neither wore a raincoat. Princess Margaret wore a beige chiffon dress and smockline, waist and cuffs, a mohair ribbon tweed coat and a small matching hat.
The couple visited Bergdorf Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue, Lord & Taylor and B. Altman, dashing from their limousine into the stores under an umbrella.
The Princess looked over carefully British merchandise at the stores she visited, exclaiming "Isn't that pretty", and "Lovely". At Brooks, which imports much of its woollens and other goods from England, Lord Snowdon examined swatches of suit material.
The visits to the stores were tied in with the official purpose of the trip, which is to promote British fabrics and fashions.
