    TWENTY AMERICAN ARMY BANDSMEN FROM HAWAII U.S. ARMY FORCES LEAD LONG PROCESSIONS OF CHEERING WELL WISHERS, PROMINENT AMONG WHOM WERE JAPANESE YOUTH.

    NEARLY 71,000 PEOPLE VISITED THE IMPERIAL PALACE WHICH WAS THROWN OPEN TO THE PUBLIC EARLY IN THE MORNING. THIS IS HOWEVER ONLY ABOUT HALF OF THOSE WHO VISITED THE PALACE DURING LAST BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS.

    THE EMPEROR APPEARED SEVEN TIMES ON A SPECIAL PLATFORM TO RESPOND TO THE CHEERING OF HIS SUBJECTS.

    ON THE PLATFORM WITH THE EMPEROR WERE THE CROWN PRINCE AKIHITO, CROWN PRINCESS MICHIKO AND PRINCE YOSHI.

    LATER IN THE EVENING THE EMPEROR GAVE A TEA PARTY TO DIPLOMATIC CORPS.
